Today is the last day to call your Senator to vote NO on FOSTA H.1865/SESTA S.1693!
On Monday, March 19, 2018 the bill went to the Senate floor for debate. At 5:30 pm a motion to invoke cloture passed with two no votes (Sen. Wyden and Sen. Rand Paul). This is a vote to end the debate, and bypass the hold that had been placed on the bill a few months ago.
According to the Senate Democrats website, under the section “The Floor”: On Wednesday, March 21, at a time to be determined, the Senate will proceed to the consideration of H.R.1865, SESTA/FOSTA. The only amendments in order are Wyden amendment #2122 and Wyden amendment #2213. There will be up to 4 hours of debate concurrently on the amendments and then the Senate will vote on the amendments in the order listed, with a 60 vote threshold required for adoption of each amendment. After the amendments are covered, the Senate will vote on passage of the bill, as amended, if amended.
When calling your Senators’ offices the calls are reported by the staff at the end of the day, so calls placed on the day of debate won’t be reported until after the vote. Meaning today is the last day to call your Senator and vote NO! on H.R. 1865.
On Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 7:30pm EST and Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 4pm EST HIPS will be participating in national community debrief calls hosted by #SurvivorsAgainstSESTA to discuss next steps and organize as much as possible around sex worker safety. If you would like to be a part of this discussion or help in future advocacy issues, please contact advocacy@HIPS.org or https://survivorsagainstsesta.org/2018/03/20/sesta-going-to-a-vote/ for more info.
On a personal note: In my early days of HIPS, one of the best communities I was a part of was a online message board run by an escort in the DC area that provided a safe forum for ladies to advertise services, share information about bad and dangerous clients, and support each other. It helped bring ladies who escorted be safer and feel less alone. it helped ladies meet clients and created a place where people who escorted could help inform men how to respectfully and safely interact with the sex industry. I really miss those ladies, and that board.
Under SESTA/FOSTA, she would be a criminal for providing that space.
PLEASE — call you Senator today.
In Solidarity, Cyndee Clay & HIPS
